“Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle.”

Our Curriculum

At our school, we pride ourselves on offering a, literature-rich K–8 language arts curriculum designed to inspire and engage students in meaningful ways.

The overall approach transcends traditional methods that rely heavily on worksheets; instead, we focus on teaching children how to think critically, reason effectively, and solve real-world problems. Our partnered curriculum is thoughtfully crafted to be science-aligned, ensuring that our students receive a well-rounded education free from religious doctrine, learning instead about religions and history from all around the world. Lessons are literature-based, sparking deep discussions and encouraging students to connect concepts to their own experiences and the world around them.

Through our emphasis on critical thinking and reasoning, students develop essential skills that prepare them for future challenges. We believe that a strong foundation in language arts not only enhances communication and comprehension but also empowers children to express their ideas, engage with different perspectives, and navigate an increasingly complex society.

Join us as we cultivate a passion for learning, fostering inquisitive minds that are ready to make a positive impact in the world!

4 Day School Week

Ponderosa Academy has adopted the four-day school week (4DSW), freeing Fridays for non-traditional educational projects like history museum visits, craftsmanship learning, and nature walks.  Across much of the United States, the idea of a four-day school week still feels unconventional; however, more than 2,100 public schools in 26 states have switched to a four-day school week. The four-day school week isn't a universal solution, but for some communities, it represents a creative adaptation that balances multiple competing demands. The key lies in recognizing that educational effectiveness depends not just on time quantity, but on how that time is used and whether it serves the whole child within their community context.

The four-day week offers valuable lessons about flexibility, community partnership, and the importance of matching educational structures to local needs. The results may not be perfect, but they're providing crucial data for the future of educational innovation. Expulsions and attendance were both lower in four-day schools, and teacher retention was higher in four-day schools, in recent studies by University of Montana professors. We maintain the fifth day to assist families who need that day.

Core Courses

While Ponderosa Academy is not Waldorf Inspired, we follow a similar weekly rhythm with our daily schedules. Our structured weekly schedule ensures that specific activities occur on designated days (e.g., painting on Mondays, woodwork on Wednesdays, nature walks on Fridays), fostering familiarity and anticipation. This predictability gives children a sense of security, helping them feel grounded and ready to engage in learning. By repeating certain activities on set days, our weekly schedule reinforces learning. When children return to the same rhythm each week, it strengthens memory and makes recall easier, especially for topics covered in the Main Lesson. If you're interested in our approach, feel free to contact us for more information on how we support homeschooling families with our unique model.

Because of our unique hybrid model, the school day is scheduled so that all pods (age groups) are engaged in the same subject at the same time. This allows homeschool families to “drop-in” at prescheduled times for specific classes, simplifying family scheduling and enhancing integrity and growth in their educational journey.

Full Instruction

Just like regular school, this is designed for families who prefer to remain involved in the learning process but perhaps life does not allow such flexibility for full time homeschooling. We have both 4 Day and 5 Day options available.

Hybrid Home School

Unlike regular school, this is designed for families who prefer to take on the main portion of a student’s weekly instruction and opt to join the group for 1 or 2 days per week only. Hybrid students use the same curriculum and weekly rhythm as the full instruction students.

Tutoring

Does your child need a little extra help? Ponderosa Academy offers private tutoring for students of all ages. Course specific one-on-one tutoring and/or remedial sessions may be scheduled with any teacher who offers this service. This service is provided to any students in the Helena and surrounding areas, including public schooled students. Our licensed staff are available to assist with your school work, and set you up for success for the year ahead.

Home School Drop-In

Our founders understand the unique challenges that homeschooling parents face, including the feelings of guilt that can arise when seeking additional support in specific subjects. They recognize that the age-old concern about "socialization" can also contribute to anxiety for parents who are dedicated to providing the best possible education for their children. We also understand that not every curriculum is a fit for every family.

Ponderosa Academy has drop-in sessions for all homeschooled children within certain parts of our weekly rhythm (schedule). Contact us today to discuss your needs and whether your drop in is academic, craft and socialization, field trip, or specific need.

Lifeskills Library

One of our core components during the weekly rhythm is the Lifeskills Library. Each week, students engage in dedicated lessons designed to teach essential life skills that will help them grow into self-sufficient adults in an ever-changing world. At Ponderosa Academy, a tech-free campus, we prioritize hands-on skills that are often overlooked in traditional education. Our curriculum emphasizes practical knowledge that fosters independence and confidence.

Some of the valuable skills our students learn include:

  • Sewing: Basic stitching, hemming, and creating simple garments or accessories.
  • Baking and Cooking: Preparing nutritious meals, understanding cooking techniques, and meal planning.
  • Personal Finance: Basics of budgeting, understanding taxes, and managing expenses.
  • Gardening: Planting, growing, and caring for a garden, as well as understanding sustainable practices.
  • Home Maintenance: Basic repairs, cleaning techniques, and upkeep of living spaces.
  • Emergency Preparedness: First-aid skills, fire safety, and emergency response strategies.
  • Communication Skills: Effective verbal and written communication, active listening, and conflict resolution.
  • Time Management: Planning and prioritizing tasks, setting goals, and managing deadlines.
  • Critical Thinking: Problem-solving exercises and decision-making techniques to navigate daily challenges.
  • Self-Care: Developing routines for mental health, personal hygiene, and wellness.

By focusing on these essential life skills, we aim to equip students aged 5 to 18 with the tools they need to thrive in everyday life.
